A chain link fence encircling your yard is a great way to add security to your yard and to keep your pets within its perimeter. Unfortunately, because a chain link fence allows a slight gap beneath its links where a curious or smart dog can find a way to escape, you will need to add some additional protection to keep them safely inside the fence. Here are some security measures you can add to your chain link fence to keep your dog safely inside.

Rebar Reinforcements

The bottom of a chain link fence can be one of the biggest weaknesses in a chain link fence's where you dog can find a crack to escape. The bottom links can often be just the slightest bit loose and your dog can push its way under the links to escape the fence. You can add some rebar reinforcements to the base of the fence and secure it into the soil around your yard.

First, select some lengths of steel rebar at a local home improvement store. You will need to purchase approximately the same amount of rebar as the length of your chain link fence you need to secure. You will also need a circular saw or similar cutting implement to cut the rebar into sections approximately two feet in length.

Once the rebar has been cut, you will need a mallet to pound the rebar into the ground through the fence's links. To do this, insert the rebar down through the bottom ten to twelve inches of the fence, being sure to weave it through the links to secure the rebar in the fence. Use your mallet to pound the rebar into the soil as it is through the links.

This secures the bottom of the fence to the ground. Place the rebar in this manner, spacing them every ten to twenty inches down the fence's length, depending on the size of your dog and their ability to squeeze through small areas.

Dog Fence Extensions

When the top of your chain link fence is not tall enough to prevent your dog from escaping over its height, you can install dog fence panels onto the fence. These panels can be made of various materials to match your fence and then are attached onto the top of the fence to give the fence additional height. The panels are also slanted inward to your fence horizontally or at a slight angle to additionally keep your dog from climbing up and over the fence.

Talk to your local fence installation professionals about your dog fence options and to keep your pet safely within the yard.
